Quiet light on the western coast.

I photograph the slow life of fishing villages, glacier valleys and the people who stay through the long winters. Long-term projects, editorial assignments and limited-edition prints from Bergen, Norway.

About

I'm Marta Halvorsen, a photographer working mostly in natural light along the fjords and islands of western Norway. My pictures tend to be patient ones — I'll wait out the weather, return to the same harbour a dozen times, and let people forget the camera is there.

After studying visual communication in Oslo, I spent six years assisting on editorial shoots before turning to my own long-form documentary projects. Today I split my time between commissioned work for magazines and tourism boards, and a continuing personal series on coastal communities that are slowly emptying out.

Prints are produced in small runs on cotton rag paper at a studio I share with two other photographers near Bryggen. If a frame on this site speaks to you, it can usually be made.

Limited editions

Select frames are released in editions of 25, larger format and numbered. These sell mainly through gallery shows; remaining stock is listed by request.

Commissions

I take a handful of editorial and travel assignments each year, plus the occasional family or working-life story. Tell me what you have in mind and roughly when.
